Resveratrol

What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants with the help of the enzyme stilbene synthase to fight against pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. It is also recognized for its anti-aging properties. Resveratrol exists as two geometric isomers: ‘cis’ and ‘trans’. The ‘trans’ can convert to ‘cis’ through isomerisation when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

How does resveratrol promote healthy living?

Resveratrol is an excellent and powerful antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes, blueberries, and pomegranates. In recent years, scientists have conducted numerous experiments on this chemical to explore the benefits of antioxidants.  Earlier, red wine was considered as the best source of resveratrol but, more recently, red wine pills have become increasingly available, with each dose containing the health benefits of hundreds of bottles of red wine.

Some health benefits include:

  • Protecting the body’s cells, nervous, and cardiovascular system
  • Extending exercise tolerance
  • Helping reduce memory loss
  • Reducing the risk of cancer
  • Lowering blood sugar levels
  • Bolstering  the immune system
  • Boosting metabolism
  • Helping weight loss
  • Recovering from long periods of strenuous activity
  • Helping for patients with Alzheimer’s disease
